Pregnancy comes with a list of dos and don’ts for women. Along with significant lifestyle changes required during this phase, the diet chart, too, changes. Pregnancy allows you to eat a lot of foods but restricts you from some. Thankfully, the list of restrictions is few. But, it is vital to control your cravings and stay away from the restricted list of foods for the sake of your little one. It is difficult to stay away from the foods you love, but they may have severe consequences at this stage. Here are some of the pregnancy diet restrictions for women to prevent harm to the mother and the baby.

Pregnancy Diet Restrictions – Avoid Undercooked Fish And Meat

If you are a sushi lover, you have to wait until you deliver your baby to eat it again. A pregnancy diet restricts any form of undercooked meat and fish. Raw fish makes you more prone to infections, and pregnancy is a phase when you are most susceptible. You may contact a bacterial or parasitic infection from raw fish or meat. Common symptoms of such infections are dehydration, diarrhea, and weakness. Infections can easily pass on to the baby too. Usually, pregnant women are more likely to contract listeria infections, and the bacteria can reach the baby through the placenta. It is serious enough to cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and defects in the fetus.

Restrict Caffeine Intake

If you cannot imagine a day without tea and coffee, pregnancy demands you to do so. Almost all women are addicted to tea and coffee, but pregnancy requires them to forgo their favorite beverages. You are not alone in this ordeal. A pregnant woman can have a maximum of 200mg of caffeine per day. The lesser you have it at this stage, the better. Do not exceed the 200mg limit because caffeine passes into the baby through the placenta very quickly. Too much caffeine build-up in the baby is harmful as they lack enzymes to metabolize it. High caffeine intake by the mother can hinder fetal growth and lead to low birth weight.

Pregnancy Diet Restrictions – Avoid Unpasteurized Milk And Juice

Avoid raw and unpasteurized milk in pregnancy to reduce the chances of contracting an infection. Unpasteurized milk products like cheese, too, can contain harmful bacteria like Listeria. The same is valid for unpasteurized juice and can lead to severe complications for the baby. Only eat pasteurized milk, milk products, and fruit juice during this time. Pasteurization helps to kill all the harmful bacteria without taking away the nutrition.

Stay Away From Smoking And Alcohol

Pregnant women should completely stay away from alcoholic drinks. Drinking leads to obesity and badly affects the growth and development of the fetus. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a severe condition where the alcohol that passes onto the baby’s bloodstream leads to growth deficits. It also damages the central nervous system of the baby, causing severe abnormalities. Such babies are more at risk to suffer from physical abnormalities, intellectual disability, and organ defects. Moreover, it heightens the chances of miscarriage and stillbirth. Smoking should be highly restricted in pregnancy as it prevents proper blood and oxygen flow to the fetus. Apart from causing risks of miscarriage, it is a reason for low-birth-weight and stillbirth.

Pregnancy makes you crave for your favorite foods at odd hours. But it is necessary to eat healthy during these months and avoid the foods that can harm the baby. Check with your doctor before planning a proper pregnancy diet and strictly abide by the list of restrictions. It’s a small wait till your baby enters the world, and you recover from delivery before you can go back to your old diet again.
