Postpartum depression is often characterized by mood swings, crying spells, and feelings of guilt after having a child. This happens in women who have just given birth. Many women find that they are not able to go back to their former lives and their old routines. Some women become so distressed that they end up in the hospital claiming suicide.

This is known as postnatal depression. It is more common in women who have given birth to a first child. However, women with multiple births tend to develop postnatal depression later in their lives. The major cause behind postnatal depression is the lack of close and personal contact with the new mother after childbirth. The new mothers spend most of their time at home or staying in hospitals where there are many other mothers like them.

This is why postpartum depression occurs most commonly among women who have delivered a first child. The second and subsequent births do not bring any change to the mother’s life. Women who have delivered multiple babies tend to have less close personal contact with the new mothers after childbirth. This is one of the reasons why postpartum depression is more prevalent among these mothers. They also find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning. Mothers who have gone through c-section also face difficulties in getting back into their pre-birth routines.

Effects Of Vitamins

Vitamin B12 is one of the important nutrients required by mothers to recover quickly from postpartum depression. However, most physicians do not advise mothers to take supplements. The main reason for this is the fear of deficiency that can be caused by the intake of these vitamins. It is believed that a deficiency in vitamin B12 can result in nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps, and other gastrointestinal disorders.

Maternal deprivation is also another reason why many physicians discourage mothers from consuming vitamin supplements. However, research has shown that there are numerous benefits associated with them. On the one hand, they help mothers recover very quickly from postnatal depletion; on the other hand, they can prevent certain types of maternal illnesses that are often associated with postnatal depression. It has been observed that these supplements prevent postnatal depression by normalizing the levels of serotonin in the mother’s body. Moreover, these pills increase the production of the baby’s brain cells and improve the concentration of the newborn baby.

Vitamin E is another important nutrient that is required by mothers to recover from postnatal depletion. However, most mothers tend to intake only a small amount of it. It is believed that excessive intake of vitamin E may affect the health of the mother and the baby. This is because excessive consumption of vitamin E can lead to the formation of free radicals in the body that can destroy the sensitive tissues of the baby’s brain. It is important to consume foods rich in vitamin E to prevent free radical formation.

Taking Of Birth Control Pills

Some mothers also resort to birth control pills after childbirth in an attempt to balance hormone levels in their bodies. However, this can have negative effects on their health later on. Birth control pills work by regulating hormones and regulating the reproductive system of the woman. Once these pills are discontinued or once a new mom starts menstruating again, the level of the hormones will decrease again. Although some doctors recommend that women stop taking birth control pills after delivery to avoid the occurrence of osteoporosis, others believe that postpartum hormones are very important for a healthy baby. Therefore, it can be suggested that these pills should be continued during the postnatal period to help women balance hormones in their bodies.

Last but not the least, women consuming vitamin B12 can greatly reduce the risk of having an inadequate or compromised placenta. It is a known fact that the placenta is responsible for absorbing many nutrients that are essential for the growing baby. However, prolonged or incorrect absorption of these nutrients may lead to inadequate growth in the baby. Therefore, it is best for pregnant women to take vitamin B12 supplements to ensure healthy development and a healthy baby through the post-childbirth period.
